EW Windows Uploader is designed to be used with leads between the logger and the computer serial port supplied by EW Avionics but some users may wish to make leads for their own purposes - e.g., multiheaded leads which can be used with different manufacturer's loggers without replugging at the computer end. This page supplies details needed for these purposes.

Note: some pins on the EW Loggers are used for TTL level signals or for power supplies into or out of the logger. These pins MUST NOT be connected to RS232 level signals otherwise damage to the logger may result.
There are four combinations of connections which can be used depending on whether:

These days 9 pin connectors are common on the computer but in the past 25 pin connectors were widely used.

The choice of DTR or RTS from the computer has no impact on the operation of EW Windows Uploader which controls both of these signals simultaneously.

The leads supplied by EW Avionics usually have the DTR signal wired to provide the flow control function. This matches the default setting used by EWView/DOS. However, it has been found that this can give problems in some circumstances when running under Microsoft Windows. Therefore, EWView/DOS has an option to use the RTS signal which does not have these problems.

If the lead is also to be used with EWView/DOS when running under Microsoft Windows then use of RTS is recommended. In all other cases it is probably better to use DTR unless other considerations (such as use with other manufacturer's loggers) indicate use of RTS.
